STEVEN NICHOLAS SMITHHART, AGE 36, LEFT THIS LIFE ON 12-18-20.
IN LIFE, STEVEN WAS THE YOUNGEST OF 5 SIBLINGS AND LOVED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM.
STEVEN WAS A GIVER, NEVER ONE TO TAKE.
IF STEVEN SAW SOMEONE DOWN ON THEIR LUCK, IT WAS HIS DUTY TO HELP THEM OUT.
FROM HOLDING BENEFITS OR SITTING AND COUNSELING WITH WHOMEVER ON SOBRIETY OR GOD, STEVEN WAS MOVED TO HELP OUT.
OUR GOAL WITH THE FOUNDATION IS TO CARRY ON HIS LEGACY OF GIVING HOPE TO THOSE WHO NEED IT.
JUST AS HE WOULD DO, WE CARRY THE TORCH IN HIS HONOR.
Our Story – Turning Grief into Purpose
Some moments change your life forever.
For our family, that moment came on what seemed like an ordinary Friday morning in December of 2020.
After working through the night, our brother, Steven, was only a few miles from home when fatigue caused him to fall asleep behind the wheel. His truck crossed into the opposite lane, resulting in a devastating head-on collision. Both Steven and the other driver were rushed to the local hospital.
This tragedy unfolded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of hospital restrictions, our family was not allowed inside the emergency room. We stood outside waiting, praying for good news, when a doctor walked out and gently delivered the news no family is ever prepared to hear.
The doctors’ words – “We just aren’t equipped to handle trauma that severe.” Steven's injuries were too severe. Despite every effort, the medical team could not stabilize him well enough to transfer him to a trauma center capable of treating his injuries. He passed away that morning. The other driver was stabilized and airlifted to a larger trauma center but tragically passed away a few days later.
In a single accident, two lives were lost, and two families were changed forever.
As we struggled to navigate unimaginable grief in the weeks that followed, we asked ourselves a few questions:
How can we turn this tragedy into something that helps others? How can we help prevent other families from the devastating heartbreak of loss due in part to lack of equipment?
Those questions became the foundation of everything we do today.
Initially, we explored what it would take to help our local hospital become a designated trauma center. After researching the enormous financial commitment required, we realized there was another way to make a meaningful impact. We chose to focus on supporting first responders, especially volunteer fire departments, who are often first on the scene when every second matters. By providing essential life-saving equipment and resources, we aim to better protect and serve our communities through our nonprofit organization.
Steven wasn't a perfect person; none of us are, but he possessed something far more important: a heart that genuinely cared for others. If he saw someone struggling, he would do everything he could to help. He never hesitated to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or give what he could to someone in need. His compassion, generosity, and selfless spirit became the inspiration behind the Steven Smithhart Memorial Foundation.
Today, we honor Steven's memory by continuing the work he would have wanted to do; helping others.
The Steven Smithhart Memorial Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening our communities by supporting local first responders and investing in the future through education. Our mission is to create lasting, positive change by providing equipment capable of saving lives, awarding scholarships through our scholarship program, and offering opportunities for young people to become active leaders within their communities.
West Texas is home to one of the busiest oil and gas regions in the nation. With increased traffic comes an unfortunate increase in serious accidents and emergencies. Volunteer fire departments and first responders are often the first to arrive when tragedy strikes, yet many operate with limited budgets and aging equipment. Through fundraising and community partnerships, our foundation helps provide these departments with vital equipment and resources that improve emergency response capabilities and may ultimately save lives.
While providing financial assistance through scholarships is one of our primary goals, we believe preparing our youth for the future goes far beyond helping pay for college. We are committed to investing in the next generation by providing meaningful opportunities for students to serve their communities, develop leadership skills, and gain valuable real-world experience.
Through our events and fundraising efforts, high school and college students have the opportunity to volunteer alongside community leaders, first responders, local businesses, and dedicated volunteers. Whether helping with event setup, registration, auctions, raffles, hospitality, or countless behind-the-scenes tasks, students gain hands-on experience while positively impacting their communities.
We understand that volunteer service has become an important part of college admissions, scholarship applications, internships, and future employment. As a way of thanking students for their commitment and service, the Steven Smithhart Memorial Foundation proudly provides personalized letters of recommendation for college admissions, scholarship applications, internships, and employment opportunities. These letters reflect the student's dedication, work ethic, leadership, and willingness to serve others.
Simply put, we want to help students however we can. By investing in both their education and their personal growth through our scholarship program, we hope to inspire a lifelong commitment to service, leadership, and giving back. We believe that scholarships open doors, but volunteerism builds character, confidence, and lifelong relationships. By offering both, we are helping shape the next generation of compassionate leaders.
Our signature fundraiser, the Tried & True Helping Hands Cook-Off & Concert, is a sanctioned State Championship BBQ Cook-Off that brings together cook teams, businesses, volunteers, sponsors, and families from across Texas and beyond. More than just a competition, it is a celebration of community and generosity. The event features championship BBQ, live music, auctions, raffles, vendors, family activities, and entertainment, all while raising funds to support our mission.
This annual event is the lifeline of our organization, generating the resources needed to purchase first responder equipment, award scholarships, and expand our community outreach programs. Throughout the year, we also host additional fundraisers—including raffles, gun boards, benefit dinners, and other community events—to continue building our scholarship fund and increasing our support for local first responders.
None of this would be possible without the generosity of our sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community partners. Every contribution—whether it's a financial gift, donated item, volunteer hour, or sponsorship—helps us continue transforming one family's tragedy into hope for countless others.
When you support the Steven Smithhart Memorial Foundation, you are doing more than donating to a nonprofit organization. You are helping equip the men and women who answer the call when lives are on the line. You are helping deserving students pursue their dreams, gain valuable life experience, and become tomorrow's leaders. Most importantly, you are helping build stronger, safer, and more compassionate communities throughout West Texas.
We invite you to explore our website, learn more about our First Responder Donation Program, meet our scholarship recipients, and discover the incredible students who volunteer alongside us. We hope you'll join us in carrying forward Steven's legacy of compassion, generosity, and service.
Thank you for believing in our mission and for helping us make a lasting difference. Together, we are honoring Steven's memory by serving others, strengthening our communities, and creating opportunities that will impact lives for generations to come.

In West Texas, a thriving center for the oilfield industry, we’ve seen a significant increase in traffic in recent years. This phenomenon has led to a troubling rise in accidents and fatalities. Our foundation responds by raising funds to enhance first responder support, particularly for local volunteer fire departments, providing them with vital equipment essential for saving lives. Additionally, we award scholarships through our scholarship program to deserving high school seniors from several local high schools.
One of our primary fundraising initiatives is the sanctioned State Championship Cook-Off—The Tried & True Helping Hands Cook-Off—which unites the community in support of these vital causes. This exciting event features BBQ cook teams from Texas and beyond, alongside a concert, auctions, raffles, gun boards, an awards ceremony, and more.
